On the afternoon of December 13, 2023, the School of Mathematical Sciences at Shenzhen University hosted the 2023 Academic Annual Conference of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao (National) Applied Mathematics Center Shenzhen Sub-Center. The conference was attended by prominent scholars, including Professor Yao Zheng'an, Director of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao (National) Applied Mathematics Center and professor at Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Yang Tong, Academician of the European Academy of Sciences and professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Professor Dai Yuhong, Vice Dean of the Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chairperson of the Chinese Operations Research Society, and recipient of the National Distinguished Youth Science Fund, Professor Hao Zhifeng, President of Shantou University, Professor Zhao Peng, Vice President of Jiangsu Normal University, and recipient of the National Distinguished Youth Science Fund, Professor Wang Zhaojun, Executive Dean of the School of Statistics at Nankai University and recipient of the National Distinguished Youth Science Fund, Professor Lei Zhen, Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences at Fudan University and recipient of the National Distinguished Youth Science Fund, among more than 20 other distinguished scholars. Representatives from the School of Mathematical Sciences at Shenzhen University were also present.
Professor Yao Zheng'an, Director of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao (National) Applied Mathematics Center, delivered the opening speech, expressing gratitude to the experts who have long supported and cared for the development of the center. He hoped that the attendees would actively contribute ideas and suggestions to support the construction of the sub-center.
During the conference, Professor Hu Yaohua, Vice Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences at Shenzhen University, presented a report titled "Sparse Optimization Methods and Their Applications." He highlighted the achievements of the sub-center since its establishment in May of the current year, discussing the theoretical progress of non-convex sparse optimization methods, their models, and algorithms. Professor Hu also shared research outcomes in the application of these methods in bioinformatics and spectral analysis. He provided an overview of the sub-center's academic exchanges over the past half-year and offered prospects for future research and development.
Mr. Yu Zhibin from Huawei Cloud Vertical and Horizontal Experimentation Lab delivered a report titled "Mathematical Problems of Large Systems for Big Data and Big Models." He discussed mathematical challenges involved in dealing with massive datasets and complex models, emphasizing the need for solving mathematical problems and proposing methods to construct reliable and efficient large-scale systems.
Professor Zhang Ye from Shenzhen North Moscow University presented the achievements of the Shenzhen Sub-Center at the Shenzhen-North Moscow University 2023 Joint Exhibition. He highlighted the accomplishments of the university in talent recruitment, graduate education, and collaboration with enterprises in 2023. The university actively organized academic conferences, lectures, and seminars, providing a platform for students and faculty to engage with top scholars and facilitating academic cooperation and exchange.
Associate Professor Yan Ming from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) reported on "Distributed Optimization Algorithms and Their Applications." He introduced the progress and latest achievements in distributed optimization algorithms, engaging in discussions with experts about the future prospects of these algorithms.
Associate Professor Zhou Yan from Shenzhen University presented a report on "Statistical Methods Research Based on Next-Generation Sequencing Data." He shared his research work and plans, proposing novel statistical models for next-generation sequencing data, providing theoretical proofs, and offering meaningful explanations in practical biomedical applications.
Subsequently, under the guidance of Professor Yao Zheng'an, a panel discussion was held among the on-site expert scholars. The consensus among the experts was that the Shenzhen Sub-Center had achieved remarkable results within a short period of six months in applied mathematics research, patent applications, industrialization, and academic exchange activities. They believed that the Shenzhen Sub-Center, leveraging the regional advantages and open characteristics of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, undoubtedly had vast development space and promising prospects. Furthermore, the experts engaged in in-depth discussions and shared their experiences in the fields of research results, technological innovation, talent cultivation, industrialization, and future development directions in mathematics, fostering lively discussions on how to promote the application of mathematics in various academic disciplines.
